One of the main reasons slaver was considered to be abolished, even before the cotton gin was developed, was the theory that “free” “wage slaves” would work harder than slaves. So, that’s exactly what happened when they were made free. They made pretty much the same crappy amount, doing the same crappy work, but on paper they were free.
(And by “they” I really mean to refer to a “we,” as many of us are members of the proletariate class.)
