Is there a difference between the two? In addition: http://www.bivio.com/index.html Is opening an account here the same as opening a hedge fund or an investment partnership? I know Warren Buffett began before Berkshire Hathaway the Buffett Partnership, is what is shown on this website similar?

or is it an unofficial, loosely defined term to describe entities with certain characteristics?

Every website about hedge funds seems to want to sell me a fund or tell me how great their company is. Is there a site that explains hedge funds without a sales pitch?

they actually have “how to create your own hedge fund” classes at the same places they have “buy 100 houses with no money down”. Usually at the Hyatt or something like that.

starting a hedgefund is easy. all you need is a lawyer who specializes in that sort of thing and he can set it up for you for about $20K. im sure the lawyer can walk you through the rest of it, but basically youll need to find a prime broker/fund administrator, and an accountant (which is not cheap) and of course office space….among other things.
do you have a strategy? (long/short, global macro, multi-strat…etc), do you know what a sharpe ratio is? how about an information ratio? if you answered no to any of these questions…you have a looong way to go.
the hard part if of course raising capital. may i suggest you tap into your friends and family for money. do it for a few years and build a track record and then MAYBE the institutional guys will even consider giving you money….that is of course if you can even get a capital introduction. if you havent read ‘hedgehogging’ by barton biggs, i suggest you read is ASAP.
