It looks like the highest price was reached May07 at about $3.7 a pound.

For older price’s look at the chart in this link (page 18), which has a 50 year copper price chart 1954 to 2004 (a life time)? The price ranged from about $0.25 to $1.25

Man has used copper for about 10,000. I found some prices from 300 years ago – in 1714 cost was £150 and in 1694 cost was £168 per ton. (These figures, currency for currency, far exceed modern prices) http://www.copper.org/education/60centuries/industrial_age/itseffect.html
