I have a large portfolio of stocks that I bought several months ago and I have huge profits on paper. If I sell now, I will have to pay a 28% cap gains tax on it, so I am wondering how long I should hold these stocks in order to qualify for the much lower long term cap gains tax rate. I have had the original stock for over 2 years, but now the company is being bought. I’m wondering if I should sell before the deal is completed to avoid paying short term capital gains if I need to sell the new stock (considering that I will need to sell within a year to help with downpayment on a house).
